
Sukanlaya Sawang is a highly motivated, charismatic academic with an impressive professional background and research agenda. She received degrees in organisational psychology and innovation management with the international experiences (industry and higher education) from Australia, Japan, Thailand, U.K. and USA. Sukanlaya worked at Chulalongkorn University, Thailand as a full time Psychology lecturer, consultant and trainer, before she permanently moved to Australia. Prior to joining QUT Business School, Sukanlaya was a project manager for the Organisational Safety and Wellbeing unit at Queensland Police Service in conjunction with Griffith University.
Recently, Sukanlaya has been appointed as a research Professor at The International Centre for Transformational Entrepreneurship, Coventry University. Prior to joining Coventry University, she was a Reader (associate professor) and Director of Research Internationalisation at University of Leicester, U.K.
Sukanlaya’s research primarily focuses on psychology aspects of small business/entrepreneurship and innovation management. She has an extensive array of quality research publications in this area (including cross-cultural studies), experience in managing large research grants, and a strong collaborative research background with scholars from Asian countries. Sukanlaya has also provided consulting services for small businesses in Asia and Australia; training for small businesses through The Asian Productivity Organization (a regional intergovernmental organisation which aims to build the sustainable socioeconomic development of Asia and the Pacific); developed academic courses, research projects and publications relating to small businesses; been invited to provide recommendations for the Innovation Policy Report, Department of Industry, Canberra. Sukanlaya received a number of awards – including the ‘Emerald Management Reviews Citation of Excellence’; the ‘Best Paper Awards’ from the Academy of Management (AOM); and the ‘AGSE International Entrepreneurship Research Exchange’ award. She has been awarded a number of competitive grants such as the CRC Rail Innovation and the CRC Spatial Information, both as the chief investigator, to shape future research in the field.
Sukanlaya actively engages with the research community by reviewing for leading journals; serving on PhD panels and examinations; and presenting her research at leading international conferences. She is also an active member of the Australian Centre for Entrepreneurship Research, a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, U.K. as well as the Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship . Sukanlaya is also an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Psychology and BMC Psychology.
